Self Care

Self-care is an essential component of providing effective counseling services. The American Counseling Association’s Code of Ethics states that “… counselors engage in self-care activities to maintain and promote their emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual well-being to best meet their professional responsibilities.” As a practicing counselor, I will prioritize my own self-care by taking time for myself and my family outside of my professional responsibilities. To safeguard my clients and preserve my own mental health, I will practice mindfulness and identify when I need to scale back my case load and best serve my community.

Planned Self-Care Activities (minimum of 1 hour per day):

  • Spending time with family & friends

  • Meditation

  • Reading

  • Bicycling

  • Walking

  • Listening to music
